Marrakech: 500 Meters of Street Lighting Based on Solar Energy

The leading company in the field of electricity “Philips Lighting” announced Monday in Marrakech, installation of the first 500 meters of road-lighting LED (LED diodes), a technique based on solar energy.

Speaking at a press conference dedicated to the presentation of this innovative project, Anas Benhaddou, marketing director “Philips Lighting marketing Maghreb and West Africa,” added that this project was submitted for consideration in more that in a year ago and will bring efficient solutions in energy saving and, consequently, improve the living conditions of rural populations in particular.

“This innovation which should be the solution of solar lighting for roads and open spaces will the change the lives of urban and rural populations throughout the world, including those previously lacking access to electricity,” he said. Benhadou emphasized in this context that the re volution in LED lighting offers great potential and considerable savings for Africa, saying that “the passage of the African continent of its current lighting with new LED solutions, would be synonymous with an economy in energy costs each year up to 10 billion U.S. dollars, representing more than 50 million tons of carbon and energy efficiency of 35 power plants”.

The global markets for lighting are taking up this technology and world leader Philips Lighting predicts that by 2020, nearly 75 pc of the value of the global market will be LED. The total transition to the latest technology in LED lighting would allow significant savings of up to 80 pc in many applications.

LEDs are considered by many as a future technology in the field of general illumination. Indeed, it is estimated that by 2020, LEDs could represent 75 pc of the lighting market. They are al so used in the construction of flat television screens: the backlighting of LCD as the main source of illumination in LED television screens.
