To increase energy security, strengthen regional integration and promote industrial growth and diversification, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia have joined together to expedite the deployment of concentrated solar power (CSP) and exploit the region’s vast solar energy resources.These countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have developed and are now implementing an investment plan under the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) that aims to:Deploy about 1 GW of generation capacity, amounting to about 15 percent of the projected global pipeline and a two-fold increase in the current global installed Concentrated Solar Thermal Power capacity. pixel.jpgRABAT: A consortium led by Saudi International Company for Water and Power (Acwa) is close to wining a contract worth at least $500 million to build a 160-megawatt concentrated solar power plant south of Morocco, a source said yesterday.”We are going to opt for the offer made by the consortium of Acwa,” the source said.

Acwa has teamed up with Spanish engineering firm Aries IS and TSK EE for the design, finance, construction, operation and maintenance of the plant near the city of Ouarzazate. Read the rest of this entry

The pilot of the solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse has been forced to abandon a flight across Morocco.

The plane took off from the capital Rabat on Wednesday, aiming to reach the central city of Ouarzazate.

Pilot Andre Borschberg was not in danger, but strong headwinds forced him to turn back to Rabat, the Solar Impulse team said on its website. Read the rest of this entry

A consortium led by Saudi International Company for Water and Power (ACWA) is close to win a contract worth at least US$500m to build a 160-megawatt concentrated solar power plant south of Morocco, an official source said on Wednesday.

“We are going to opt for the offer made by the consortium of Acwa,” the source, familiar with the discussions about the contract, told Reuters. The source asked not to be named pending an official announcement due later this week.
